Children's Home Society of South Dakota traces its work to 1893, when it was founded as the state's first nonprofit social service agency, and its Black Hills Children's Home campus on South Rockerville Road outside Rapid City provides psychiatric residential treatment for children alongside outpatient mental health services including psychiatry and individual, family and group therapy. Each residential campus includes a school certified by the South Dakota Department of Education. The agency is accredited by the Council on Accreditation and licensed by the South Dakota Department of Social Services, and its care is trauma-focused.

Cathedral Home for Children has worked with young people and families in Laramie since 1910, and its campus on North 3rd Street combines residential treatment with outpatient counseling, crisis intervention and community-based support for youth with complex behavioral health needs. The approach is trauma-responsive and evidence-based, led by clinicians who specialize in children and adolescents shaped by trauma and family disruption, and the campus includes its own school, the Mae Olson Education Center, so a young person in residential care does not fall behind academically. The residential program is accredited by The Joint Commission and takes youth from Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota and beyond; the organization also holds accreditation from the Wyoming Department of Health, the Wyoming Department of Family Services and Cognia. Cathedral Home is a non-profit supported by donors. Medicare, private and military insurance and state-funded placements are accepted.

The Gaudenzia Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center. Gaudenzia in Philadelphia is a certified multi-service non-profit community addiction services provider, with multiple locations throughout Philadelphia and the state. Offering residential detox, long term rehabs for men, women, women with children, pregnant women, HIV symptomatic and dual diagnosis patients. Payment by Medicaid or insurance, with payment assistance available.

Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center is a non-profit residential behavioral health inpatient facility for adolescent girls aged 12 to 17, set in the Prescott National Forest area of Arizona. It treats substance use and co-occurring mood and trauma-related disorders, working with young people who have often experienced significant and complex trauma in early childhood, and it has completed a three-year certification in the Sanctuary Model — a whole-organization trauma-responsive approach built on shared values and practice rather than a single therapy. Education is delivered on site, and an equine therapy program helps residents work on relationships and boundaries. Medicaid — AHCCCS in Arizona — Medicare, private and military insurance, state funding and self-pay are accepted.

Treasure Coast Academy is a Teen Challenge boarding school for troubled boys aged 13-18 located in Vero Beach, Florida. The facility is lower in cost than typical therapeutic boarding schools for boys, offering help and hope to parents of troubled or misguided teenage boys.

Embark Behavioral Health's Springville residential treatment center works with adolescent and teen girls, and with nonbinary and LGBTQ+ young people, on Level 1 autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression and mood disorders. Set near the Springville freshwater springs, it blends inpatient mental health care with outdoor experiences, daily fitness and schooling, using approaches including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Private insurance is accepted; Embark states that it cannot accept Medicaid for this program, so cover should be settled before admission.

Alpharus Health Lake Villa is a beautiful residential addiction treatment center and long-term rehab on the shores of Fox Lake in Lake Villa, Illinois. Its operator changed its name from Gateway Foundation to Alpharus Health in August 2026.
