I am getting ready to start a poppy tea detox and I am considering so things and I have accumulated an arsenal of Kratom and loperimide and tenzepam. I I wonder if I am just repeating old patterns that got me addicted in the first place I am always looking for an answer to my problems or my feelings or my state of being in a chemical and another part of me just wants to not feel the shit. Have spent so much time on forums talking with people about how to do this and it seems like a lot of these guys are just switching around their chemicals and like a merry go round. Is there any value to feeling the full pain and giving your brain a full on detox or is that just masochism?

I have a choice to find a sober living home that my 8 year old daughter can stay with me or to leave her with her grandparents for a few more months until I get back on my feet. She wants to be with me and I miss her so much but my parents think it is too hard on her and me to move her around before I am really ready for her. I can barely think straight still cause I am only 3 weeks clean off meth so I really do not know what to do. I was a mom on meth trying to juggle all the balls in the air until they came crashing down all at once. She is my angel and I have to spend the rest of my life making up to her for everything she had to go through already so I don’t want to make a mistake right away.

Does a place like The Salvation Army ARC give the same kind of treatments as a fancy rehab. What I am getting at is is a person just paying for a fancy room and stuff or is there also something different that happens at more expensive places that is helpful that the ARC does not have?

Is it true that saunas help you when you are trying to quit cocaine? I kind of believe this because I the best way I know to get rid of a hangover is to exercise hard for an hour or so so I can sweat out all of last nights toxins.

I have a little cocaine problem. Not sure how serious the situation is. I am at a point now where I need it or I feel very depressed. I know this is not real depression but it makes it challenging to stick with my efforts to cut back. If I take St. John’s Wort will this alleviate some of this daily come down depression? Or if not St. John’s is there another supplement I can take to smooth the day after feeling a bit?

My son is 18. He is addicted to marijuana and other drugs and he is trying to quit. His doctor (a family friend) recommended NA. There are a NA groups in our city but they are filled with older people, most are in their 30s or 40s already. My son feels intimidated and he does not have much in common with these people. He only went to one meeting but he is not sure he wants to go back. He does want to stop using though because he wants to try for junior college next fall. Should I encourage him to keep going or is the age mismatch a deal breaker? If he doesn’t go to NA here he will have to probably do an outpatient program in Topeka and live with his aunt and I am worried that staying more or less unsupervised in such a big city will be tough on him.

Hello- I don't know where to start or how far back to go....... I have a 31 yr old son who was diagnosed as a child with ADD. He has struggled lots in life to fit in socially etc. He was on ADD meds as a young child and then nothing for years. About 5 years ago I helped him find a Dr. specializing in helping adults like him and he was put on Adderol. That Dr. has disappeared and my son has slowly become an out of control addict. He has slowly increased his dose to 90 mg's a aday and he's always difficult but crazy difficult when he runs out every few months and can't get a script for a few days - he becomes: mean, violent, very very agitated and is right now about to loose everything in his life- his wife and kids- his relationship with most of his close family- his job. He is banned from several public places and an airline for abusive language. He lives in Co. and I in Fl. I was up there last week visiting when he had one of his epidsods and one thing led to another and I brought him back with me. He is in a motel room alone detoxing. He is very strong willed and this is what and how he wanted it. He has a great attitude about the process and feels all he needs is 3 to 5 days of being alone to get it out of his system. When he has gone days without Adderol before he feels he flipped out because of his poor quality marriage/ homelife. He felt like all she did was nag him and belittle him and that provoked his bad behavior. He has never been violent to a person.... only verbally abusive and has been known in those times to break a few things. He has me convinced that he can handle this and I am not to call him- just quietly bring him some dinner each night and let him sleep and get it out of his system. I have been reading a lot online and I fear for the weeks- months ahead for my son. Do you know much about this? Any suggestions? He has been in the motel for about 24 hrs now. Are there danger signs..... Please help if your able. Sincerely, Barbara Altman

How long does it take to completely reverse the effects of opiate receptor down regulation after addiction? I am 4 months totally clean and life still seems more grey than I remember it before I started messing with pharmaceuticals. I am willing to wait I am just hoping that things are going to continue to get better?

Is there a difference between alcohol rehab and drug rehab? I am not sure I want to get treatment with hard drug users. I realize this makes me sound a bit elitist but I’ prefer to think of myself as a pragmatist and just don’t think I would have much in common with a street heroin user or a person going to crack houses.

My son is a D&A addict with MH issues. He needs a longer term rehab facility that can also assist him with his MH issues. He recently lost his job and has no insurance. A few days after losing his job he was hospitalized in a BHU where he was started on meds for his MH issues. When he left there he went to a residential program paid for by the county for ten days. From there he was taken to a homeless shelter in the middle of a heavily drug affected area in a nearby, small city. He used again in just a few days. He desperately needs and wants help but we don't know how to get him help and my husband and I cannot afford to send him to a treatment facility. We live in PA. All help will be appreciated!

Read your article about Alcoholic thinking and shared it with my Dad who is an alcoholic and would like to fine the right help. He is 76 and has tried just going to AA but really had trouble finding a sponsor he could respect and trust. I am thinking a good local therapist might be very helpful to him. Is there any one that you know of in Orange County, CA?

My husband got out of the USMC 90 days ago. Got hooked on meth withing 2 weeks. He's tried 3 times to get off and and keeps relapsing. He can be clean for about 5 days then binges for 5 days. He obviously needs a residential program. Do you know if he has a VA Benefit that would cover this treatment since we have no health care insurance at the time?

What exactly is a man in his mid 70s who is drinking too much supposed to do. My uncle retired only a couple of years ago but since he did he’s come adrift and all he does every day now is sit in the local hole in the wall bar and drink quarts of beer from mid morning onward. I’ve talked to him about it and he says he knows he’s got a bit of a problem but he doesn’t know what to do about it. He’s a really good man but he’s a bit cranky and set in his ways he’s just not going to do well in any situation with younger people like AA. He’s not well off but he needs some help and I am not sure he should be living on his own really. What can a senior citizen on a pension do when he needs serious help with his drinking?

My son wants to go to rehab. I have paid or partly paid for residential treatment 2 times already in the past 5 years. He has a heroin addiction. I want to support him but I do not have an endless supply of money to fund these expensive treatment stays. What I want to know is is rehab really better than much more affordable outpatient treatment for someone in his position. He is 25 and he has been using alcohol and marijuana since he was a young teenager and heroin since he was about 18. It is hard but I have made so many decisions based on emotion that think I need to start making decisions based on logic and fact – not blind hope.

My son is in a prison psychiatric hospital after assaulting two people in the park last week. He is a meth addict and from what I have put together he was tweaking hard after a many day straight binge with no sleep. He is being charged with a felony. He is still psychotic now so there is no douibt he was last weekend at the time of the crime. Can he use an insanity defense and maybe get some treatment instead of prison (he has prior theft convictions) or because this is a violent crime is treatment unlikely?

Have been abusing ritalin for 6 months. I take about 100 mgs a day on an average day orally and sometimes I will go up to 150 and snort some, like on the weekends. I am totally addicted and I want to quit. The comedown crash is harsh enough that I am scared for the detox. Do I have anything to worry about by trying it on my own? I am planning on holing up with a bunch of DVDs and some low dose Xanax for a long weekend to try to get this garbage out of my system once and for all. What started as an amusing ride/study aid has become something really sucky.
