About Mark Abrahams
Raised in a NJ suburb of NYC by liberal Jewish parents, I was free to explore the outer world, which was rich with fields, brooks, and woodlands. As a schoolboy I was also encouraged to experiment, and my first chemistry sets gave way to an expanding home laboratory in which I conducted many experiments in chemistry, biology, and LASER holography.
College brought a whole new variety of explorations. The physical, social, psychological, and spiritual processes that I became intensely preoccupied with in college fueled my passion for self-discovery. I entered and completed educations in a theological seminary and in graduate school.
These important stages of my development were just the beginning of my life. While love of learning has been my constant companion, I realized along the way that I had a need to share the process of self-actualization in order to help others. My particular contribution to the mental health profession of counseling draws from depth-psychology as well as from existentialist schools, from both Eastern and Western schools on the philosophy of mind. I am not a stranger to the physical disciplines of neuroscience, but the philosophy of counseling, based in education, rather than a medical model, does not treat the client as a patient. That is to say, despite physical correlates to states of mind, unhappy people should not be defined by whatever pathology from which they are suffering. The therapeutic assumption upon which I proceed is based on acknowledgement of the client's essential wholeness, not on a diagnostic term for his/her dis-ease. Individuals are NOT their disease.
What I do
I consider myself first and foremost to be a philosopher of mind. My professional counseling credentials are vehicles by which I can practice my own version of Socratic midwifery, which is to say, not to lay an authoritarian trip on my clients, but rather to facilitate the birth of their own self-realization. The instruments that I employ in the service of such midwifery are derived from the disciplines of philosophy, religion, psychology, and hypnosis.

Tripping Can Be Traumatic
I have suffered with anxiety for almost 14 years now; and I am trying to find the med or combination of meds that can finally help me feel better. The only thing is that my anxiety was directly caused from trying mushrooms when I was 21. I had taken them twice before and had pleasant reactions both times; but the third time i tried them about a hour after I took them I felt a sudden wave of panic come over like a dark tide. I had never had any kind of panic or anxiety before so the feeling was alien to me so I went and laid down and went to sleep; when i woke up the next day the feeling was still there and its really never went away. I have tried taking Lexapro and Buspirone to mixed but mainly mild success. My anxiety is largely social based so its mainly when I around people or if I sit in the house for too long and then i get into a "zone". Usually when im at work Im fine because im constantly doing something and don't have time to "think too much". Drinking or smoking weed only makes it worse so i stopped that years ago. Iv had people suggest micro-dosing mushrooms again to try and reset what happened but Im scarred it'll only make things worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

In 1996 I entered an alcohol detox facility. Not a drink since, A week or so later I went back to the psych asking for something to help me relax, Rx no help. Asked again and he said what I really wanted was like booze in a pill (benzos). Went to new shrink and within 1 minute he dis RX for Ativan 1mg. Then 2ng. Now several psychs and many years later I'm on 40 mg valium and 10mg ambien. I need to quit but do not want to talk to current shrink. Not sure why. Am afraid he will be too aggressive or maybe I am not committed. Want to be school teacher and cannot nap as required. Have studied Ashton technique and want to try that. How does ambian fit in that? Obviously need help and should talk to shrink, but very skeptical. Went to one shrink who insisted on his schedule and he scared me off. Way to aggressive. Need help.

Hi, within the last few years I have noticed my anger has gotten noticeably worse. Especially when I'm after consuming alcohol. I've found myself saying awful and terrible things to my boyfriends and friends when I'm after alcohol. There has been three times that iv arrived home after a night of drinking and out of nowhere iv started verbally abusing my boyfriend for absolutely no reason saying horrible things that I wouldn't even dream of saying when I'm sober. the worst part is that I don't even mean the things that I'm saying yet i still end up saying them? My dad is quite an angry man who holds a grudge against everyone and iv always made sure that I don't end up like him by thinking positively and not being judgemental however when I'm drunk I seem to explode? And I don't bottle things up either because if myself and my boyfriend ever have an argument were both extremely open and honest with how we feel. I would appreciate any feedback as I don't want to put my boyfriend or my friends through this again and it scares me how I can turn into a different person and be so unpredictable without being able to control myself. Thank you

I had to stop drinking for an unrelated digestive crisis. I am a 56 year old lifetime heavy drinker and I know what alcohol does to me. I am moderately dependent physically because I drink every day but I am able to stop with no serious issues when I need to. This time I am sweating an insane amount every night when I try to sleep. I have to get up in the night every night to change my pyjamas and bed sheets because they are literally sopping wet. Why is alcohol detox making me sweat like this when it never did before? Is this a sign of something gone really wrong inside me?

If someone leaves rehab early because they can’t take it any more and because they can see that this is not where they supposed to be right now what happens with my insurance (aetna) coverage. Will they still pay for the 4 days they have been there already? My friend is in this bad situation and she wants to get out but she is scared. Her creepy counselor was threatening her that if she left she would have to pay 6 grand because her coverage would be withdrawan if she left before she finished treatment. I smell bullshit this whole place sounds like a bullshit con. Can she really get forced to pay after if she leaves early?

Does anyone else have a problem with the 12 steps forcing you to constantly look back at all the shit you did that just makes you feel terrible today now that you are trying to move on? I feel like I can do this but it is like AA is telling me that I cannot. I feel like even if I can stay sober I will just feel like useless garbage.

Why do I feel so ashamed when I wake up after drinking if I did not do anything that I am ashamed of the night before? I do not think there is anything wrong with getting drunk in my own house. I am not a violent person actually I am supposed to be a very happy and funny drunk but no matter what happened the night before I wake up feeling so ashamed I could almost cry.

Is it within a range of normal that a guy could still have some mild shakes after 2 weeks without drinking. I am also still much sweatier than usual. These shakes are nothing dramatic but I wouldn’t want to try eating a bowl of hot soup at the moment so they are noticeable and they are hard to explain away at work. One of my rowdier students actually asked me in front of the class today if I was nervous about something. I am a teacher so being a drunk is frowned upon though I am sure some of my peers knew I drank rather more than was good for me. I never drank before or at school so I am perplexed to be having such extreme and lasting shakes. For the last 6 months I was a daily 2 bottle of wine a night drinker. Prior to that I was more a heavy but still social level drinker.

I quit alcohol 16 days ago. The first days were really hard but after day 3 I felt better than I had felt for a long time. Yesterday all of a sudden I started feeling disassociated and extreme anxiety for no reason and I have had nagging anxiety bugging me since I woke up today with no cause for it. Could what I am feeling be related to my withdrawal such as related to PAWS? I never took the vitamin regimens that were suggested to me to avoid PAWS but is it still too late to do anything about it?

I quit cannabis and I have no appetite whatsoever. I am already too skinny from smoking weed because most people get all munchy high but I never did except for the first few months. Now I am 6 feet tall and 155 pounds and I have already lost 7 pounds in the first 7 days because I can barely get any food down without feeling like I want to throw up. My mom keeps trying to make me eat breakfast because she is getting worried about how skinny I look but I have to make some excuse every day. I think she thinks I have anorexia or something now. I am sick of weed and I don’t want to smoke ever again but I am worried that I cannot keep losing weight like this or I will be a skeleton. How long is this going to last for?

I am considering seeing a nutritionist for treatment advice for generalized anxiety disorder. She charges $145 per 50 minute session and I will probably have to go to at least 3 sessions over three months. There are also more fees for urine testing laboratory work because she tests for imbalances in trace minerals and fatty acids and toxins and a number of other things that may be influencing my anxiety. She will develop a personalized diet plan for me. This is a lot of money for me but if it will help then I am willing to give it a try. I do not expect this to make my anxiety go away completely but to just be something that will help to reduce it a little bit. Do you think this is worth the money?

I feel like my adrenalin system is out of whack and overacting and I am not sure what to do about it. What is happening is that small stressful things seem to get me really amped up and then I can’t calm myself down for hours after. For example today I had to make a normal sales call. I don’t really like sales calls but it’s not a cold call and it’s a part of my job I have grown used to and good at. A normal call like this always gets me feeling a little nervous but after it is done I used to calm down normally almost right away. Today my heart started pumping as I dialed the phone and I was so amped I could barely think or talk normally during the call and then the worst part was my heart rate stayed up and I had butterflies in my stomach for hours after and I could not focus on my work at all. This has been going on for about 2 weeks. Is this anxiety or panic? I do not feel like I am dying or in danger I just feel really amped up like before a big football game for no reason…?

I know my son has smoked marijuana. He is the type of person who is probably going to experiment with different things whether I want him to or not. I know better than to try to stop him from doing what he is going to do anyway, so I prefer to try to just steer him away from the most dangerous choices he could make. He is smart and he can spot bullshit a mile away, so I also can’t lie to him or tell him something unless I am sure it is true. I want to give him a list of drugs and rank them from most dangerous to least dangerous, based on their addictiveness, and risks of short term and long term consequences. I think if he and his friends had this information they might make better choices about what they will use. If it is not too much trouble, can you tell me what are the worst and what are the least dangerous drugs for teenagers to experiment with?

I have spent almost half my life in active addiction primarily to alcohol but I am a functional addict. My addiction may cause me a lot of health and family problems but I always got to work on time and got my job done and I am proud of this. I cant stand people who bring their personal life to work. Now I am 21 days sober and it’s the longest I have been sober in years and I admit that I am very on edge and irritable and most of all I really can’t focus on my work. I can’t think straight and my short term memory is pathetic I am just trying to take things one day at a time and going to meetings every evening. I am a county clerk. Ironically I was a valued employee while drinking but yesterday my supervisor called me into her office and reprimanded me for my poor work attitude and sloppiness. I am so discouraged right now because I can’t do any better than I am doing and now I might risk my job. I don’t want to tell my workmates about my alcoholism so I don’t know how to explain myself and I am worried that I am going to be sober but unemployed.

I am doing this online program for anger management and there is something that I don’t really understand. One of the things that is recommended is to pay attention to what happens phsyyicaly and cognitively when I start getting angry. Then, once I get the hang of this, once I can recognize these things happening I will know my anger is going up and I can take steps to counteract this before I get out of control. It all sounds very good in theory, but I go from 0 to 10 in about 5 seconds so how am I suppose to bust out a progressive muscle relaxation exercise or imagery exercise within that exceedingly brief window of time? I see this technique of anger stopping gets taught all the time, so I feel like I am missing something basic here. How is this supposed to work in the real world?

I am a caregiver to my dad who has Alzheimer’s. I got totally burnout around Easter and I basically broke down and had a nervous breakdown and my sister had to come and stay with us for a while to take care of dad while I went away on vacation and got myself back together. She has left now and we made a lot of changes to try to make sure that I won’t get so overwhelmed again, like we have a caregiver helper that comes in 5 days a week now in the mornings so I can go out and run errands. Therefore things are much better, however there is one thing that is really troubling me. One of the main symptoms of burnout is losing your empathy and compassion. That definitely happened to me. But even now that things are way better and I am not burnout any more, I still don’t feel much empathy or compassion for my dad, like I used to. Like a normal human being should. And this makes me feel really upset. What is going on with me?

I am an alcoholic and I have recurring depression which I think is probably undiagnosed bipolar since I definitely have periods of mania but my psychiatrist doesn’t think so and since he controls the meds that’s why I cant get right sometimes and its also why I am tired of western medicine and I want to explore more ways of self healing without chemicals. I was recommended Qigong which basically all about getting your life force in order. When your qi doesn’t flow properly you have illness and unhappiness. As I understand it even doctors admit that it works but they cannot explain why it works. Would you say that qigong is a good thing to try for depression and alcoholism?

I am a heavy drinker but not an alcoholic. I am 20 and I get drunkish 4 or 5 nights per week. About half the days after I get drunk I am very shaky the next day. It quite noticeable because my parents keep serving soup for dinner as a starter course and I have to keep making excuses to avoid the soup because if I try to eat hot soup with a spoon it is very niticable how shaky I am. On the other half of days, even though I drank about the same amount the night before, I am not shaky at all. I know that I am drinking too much and I need to cut down eventually but for the time being is this shakiness that I get half the time indicative of a serious problem I need to worry about. The fact that I only get like this half the time is the part that I don’t understand.

I am 17 and my friend is 21. We are in the same summer class. She is doing a lot of meth and now she is selling it. She just had to sell her laptop to get new ‘product’ to sell. She says the money is so good but she keeps having to sell her belongings so obviously there is a flaw in the economics of it all. She is so skinny and she looks terrible. Oh, and her mom is one of her customers – so that is weird too. Everyone knows she is using and selling so I don’t think she is going to get away with this for long.
