About Bear River Health

Bear River Health runs withdrawal management, residential treatment, partial hospitalization and outpatient care across northern Michigan, with gender-separated campuses — men at Walloon Lake and Boyne Falls, women at Gaylord — and an admissions center at Boyne Falls. Medical staff are on site 24 hours and work to SAMHSA evidence-based protocols, and the program is accredited by The Joint Commission. Its medication-assisted treatment covers all FDA-approved medications except methadone, which is worth knowing before applying if methadone is what you are stabilized on. Michigan Medicaid is accepted from specific counties and regions, with navigators who help clients apply; people who do not qualify can self-pay or be assessed for income-based payment. Medicare, private and military insurance and state funding are also accepted.

More about Bear River Health

The campuses are organized by gender rather than by level of care, so a client moves through withdrawal management, residential treatment and step-down within a single-sex setting. Admissions run through the Boyne Falls center, and there is a waitlist scheduled by priority and bed availability — Bear River says admission can be delayed even where the need is clear, when funding has to be pre-approved first, which is a practical warning worth having in advance. Medication-assisted treatment is available in every FDA-approved form other than methadone. Bear River states plainly that it is not a free non-profit program supported by grants or donations.
