Michael Douglas says that he repeated the mistakes of his father, Kirk Douglas, in raising son Cameron – by putting career before family.

Michael Douglas says he repeated the mistakes of his father, actor Kirk Douglas, in raising his son the now jailed Cameron Douglas, saying, “My priorities were very similar - Career first.”

Cameron Douglas awaits sentencing behind bars after a judge denied his bail request to attend an outpatient addiction treatment program. He faces a minimum of 10 years in federal prison for selling large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Michael Douglas spoke about his family’s painful situation in an interview for Vanity Fair magazine, saying, “Anybody who has a relative or child in substance abuse has some idea of what this feels like. This is one of those worst-case scenarios. It will ultimately be a painful lesson and very expensive as far as time is concerned. I don’t wish it on anybody, but then, you know, look, everybody’s got difficult things in life.”

Michael Douglas divorced Cameron’s mother Diandra Luke in the 1990’s, and admits to being a fairly absent father figure during that time. Like his son, Michael Douglas has had problems with substance abuse and spent time in alcohol rehab during that same decade. Describing the life of those that follow in their famous parents’ footsteps, Michael says, “The history of second-generation actors isn't great in our industry. It's kind of a tragic road, actually.”
