Real Change at a Real Ranch with Real Values

At the Ranch, teens discover the great rewards of working within a family of people, developing trust toward one another, and earning respect. Real change happens on this historic horse and cattle ranch as students learn the value of a day's work, cooperation with others, and compassion toward their fellow man.

The uniqueness of the working cattle ranch as a residential treatment program is the staff working side-by-side with the students to accomplish the tasks that need to be done, while building strong relationships and teaching the students real life skills. The ranch takes the students out of their environment of television, music, and video games and gets them excited about the natural environment, excited about learning, and excited about their physical and mental capabilities.

Schools and Programs for Troubled Teens The educational program at Turn-About Ranch is unique in that it is individualized for each student and uses real life experiences. The Academic Director creates an Individualized Academic Plan using information gathered from the student, the parents, and the sending school counselor to determine the needs of the student.

Residential Therapy

Once-a-week sessions with a professional counselor are not always an effective intervention by itself, so at Turn-About Ranch therapy takes place every day throughout the entire program. The clinical team consists of professional therapists who are responsible for the treatment planning and progress of each student, conducting individual, group, and family sessions, maintaining contact with parents on a weekly basis, and conducting mid-term and graduation visits with families.

All the other staff are trained and experienced in supporting the clinical team, and communication takes place to make sure activities and projects are set up that will help students work towards their goals on a daily basis. An example of this may include a stubborn horse being assigned to a student who is stubborn and not willing to listen to or work with others. This theme is carried out through the entire program, which means changes are not just talked about, but put into practice to create lasting change.
