Will the 12 Steps Work for Me?

Back to the document's frontpage

Most 12 steps programs within a drug rehab environment use the 12 steps programs in conjunction with private counseling, other peer therapies, cognitive training and meditative and introspective programming.

The 12 steps admittedly do not work for everyone, but since it offers something tangible and valuable to so many, it is a beneficial aspect of any comprehensive drug rehab experience.

Because the 12 steps philosophy calls for an admission of powerlessness over an addiction, and also calls for continuing participation in the community once recovering, aftercare participation is enhanced and encouraged. Since the longer a recovering addict remains active in aftercare programming the more likely long term sobriety will be sustained; these 12 step aftercare programs, by encouraging long term participation, encourage better recovery.

12 steps in drug rehab won’t work for everyone, but even for those that do not find the philosophy a good match, there is inevitably something of value learned through the introspection of 12 steps recovery, and through the process of making amends to those that have been wronged.
