Withdrawal management

Medical detox programs provide supervised withdrawal management — monitoring and, where appropriate, medication to keep someone safe and stable as substances leave the body. Withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines can be medically dangerous, so detox is usually the first step before ongoing treatment.

Residential

Residential (inpatient) rehab provides 24-hour care in a live-in setting, combining structured therapy, medical support, and a substance-free environment. It suits people who benefit from stepping away from day-to-day triggers while they establish recovery.

Long-term residential rehab extends the live-in model beyond the typical 28–30 days — often 60, 90 days or more. The added time supports deeper behavioral change and is a sub-type of residential care.

Outpatient

Intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization (PHP) programs deliver several hours of structured therapy on most days while the person continues to live at home. They are a step down from residential care and a step up from standard outpatient.

Outpatient rehab provides scheduled counseling and treatment sessions while the person lives at home and keeps up work, school, or family commitments. It suits milder cases or step-down care after a higher level of treatment.

Medication-assisted

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), now often called MOUD, combines FDA-approved medication with counseling. Opioid treatment programs (OTPs) provide methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorder; MAT also covers medications for alcohol use disorder such as naltrexone and acamprosate.

Recovery support

Sober living homes and recovery residences offer substance-free, peer-supported housing — usually after treatment — to help people practice recovery skills while transitioning back to independent living. They are a recovery-support setting rather than a clinical treatment program.
