Academy At Swift River

The Academy at Swift River is a therapeutic boarding school set amid the beautiful landscape of New England, in Cummington, Massachusetts. Swift River offers a college prep high school curriculum for troubled teens to rediscover academic success, mend relationships, recover from drug & alcohol abuse, and to prepare adolescent boys and girls for the challenges of life.

Counseling Services

Swift River has achieve national recognition as one of the top boarding schools with its therapeutic curriculum. It is committed to therapeutic practices that are grounded in solid theories of human development and change.

The Academy at Swift River follows the Life Phase Program™ - predicated on a well-researched model of how people change, and also known as the Transtheoretical Model by Prochaska et al.

Students - Adolescent Therapy

  • Individualized goal-attainment approach based on needs assessment
  • Weekly individual counseling session
  • Weekly treatment groups which includes Team Group, Caseload Group, and a Theme group - i.e. adoption, mood management, or grief and loss groups
  • Substance abuse evaluation, motivational-enhancement treatments, mutual help groups, and relapse prevention Life Phase Seminars that are experientially based to promote and facilitate the change processes associated with specific phases
  • Periodic topic-focused parenting workshops
  • Medication consultation and management

Parent/Family Education and Support

Team Parent Groups

Team parent groups are held on a rotating basis. The purposes of these groups are:

  1. To increase collaboration between parents and the staff team comprised of counselors, teachers, and residential staff.
  2. To assist parents to provide mutual aid to one another.
  3. To improve relationships among family members through talk and non-verbal methods such as adventure-based work.

Multi-Family Group Seminars

Multi-Family Group Seminars will cover a variety of topics. The seminars provide information to families about program their family member is experiencing. The seminars teach basic information about stages of change, family dynamics, information about the brain, and basic sociometry including the social atom. The first of these seminars is the Parent Seminar #1 which will occur every three months.
