Heroin Detox

Heroin detox can be accomplished either through substituting the drug for a less harmful opiate, or through a supervised period of withdrawal.

Methadone, and more recently buprenorphine, are used, and although these drugs will not get the addict high, they will stop the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms. The addict is slowly weaned off of the methadone or buprenorphine over a period of months or years.

Kicking Heroin

Alternatively, heroin addicts may choose to overcome their addiction through a brief, but very uncomfortable period of detox. The symptoms of heroin detox are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, pains, convulsions and many others. For safety, this detox should be medically supervised, and the medical team may choose to administer anti anxiety and non narcotic pain medications to alleviate some suffering. Withdrawal symptoms will normally start to subside after 2 or 3 days.

Heroin is the most potent narcotic opiate, and provokes a very strong physical and psychological addiction amongst habitual users. Heroin addicts will start to feel the symptoms of withdrawal only hours after the last dose, and these very uncomfortable withdrawal sensations are what keep so many people hooked on the drug.
